A fine art image of an ancient lakebed at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Death Valley was once covered by a saltwater lake approximately 12,000 years ago, reaching depths of six hundred feet. The cracked clay of the lakebed is one of the few signs that Death Valley was once a wet environment.
