Silver2Silicon

About our photography business

We named our photo business, Silver2Silicon, to describe our journey from traditional, silver halide-based photography to digital capture (i.e. - using a CMOS or CCD silicon-based sensor). Along the way, we've owned more cameras than we can count, spent more hours in the darkroom than we can remember and now rely on a mouse instead of our print dodging tools and an enlarger. The change in technology has been nothing short of revolutionary, but the view through the viewfinder remains nearly the same.

Regardless of the medium, our style is best characterized as ‘observational’, with the goal of finding the perfect – and often illusive – alignment of subject, color, and light. In many respects, it’s being in the right place, at the right time – then knowing when to press the shutter. With only a few exceptions, the final images are identical to how we framed them in-camera and reflect the moment-in-time which inspired us to take the photo.

We met during a photo course at Montclair University taught by mentor and friend, Klaus Schnitzer. In our early years, he instilled a high set of standards for visual excellence that became part of our DNA. Since then, we have been fortunate to combine our love of photography with a career in the photo and visual design industries. Richard had a lengthy career in the photo industry, working in a wide range of technical, marketing, sales, and management capacities for companies like Agfa, ILFORD, Hasselblad and ZEISS. Lenore had an equally extensive career as a Visual Display Manager for Macy's. Our experience with these 'best-in-class companies', combined with meeting many artists along the way, helped to refine our vision and continues to stoke our artistic fire.

So, from the more than a half-million photos we’ve taken over our 40+ year career, we hope you enjoy this small sampling – perhaps even well enough to add a few prints to your walls!

A word about printing

The printing service is provided by Digital Silver Imaging, experts in fine art print production for museums and top photographers around the world. Established in 2008 in Belmont, MA, they have found a niche in providing superior quality digital black & white and pigment inkjet prints.

To ensure the highest image and archival qualities, we have selected a variety of inkjet papers from Hahnemühle and pigmented inks from Canon. Established in 1584, Hahnemühle has a long history of manufacturing artists' papers and more recently, papers designed for inkjet printing. They are an environmentally conscious company, using pulp from renewable forests and energy only from solar, wind and water sources.

A certificate of authenticity signed by the artist accompanies each print. The photographs are available framed or unframed, with an acrylic face-mount as an option also. For unframed prints, sizes up to 16” x 20 are shipped flat, larger print sizes are rolled and shipped in a tube. See the product details for more information.
